Opium Pour Homme is, in my opinion, a benchmark Oriental fragrance for a man.
It's also a rare fragrance that, for me anyhow, fully shows all of the aromatic notes contained within its note 'pyramid'.
Opium's opening salvo of Anise and Blackcurrant is powerful, aromatic and spicey. This first phase comes across as very 'thick', almost cloying. This could prove worrisome to the unaware, but it gives a false indication of what will follow.
And what follows becomes divine. The peppered ginger accords of the mid notes blend almost immediately and seamlessly with the base of vanillic balsam, creating a truly opulent fragrance heart that lasts and lasts and lasts. All day long.
What I also enjoy about Opium is that when I inhale the sillage of the fragrance the several notes all marry into this beautiful, sultry warm glow. But when I smell close to my hand, I get the medicenal cough-syrup of the Tolu Balsam which I find really pleasing.
At the end of the fragrance life everything is a soft, muted shadow of the last several hours wear, slightly more powdery in it's aspect. In fact this last stage reminds me very much of Armani Code.
What more can I say. This is a great Oriental for men, and one I always enjoy in the colder months of the year. I just love its warm caress!!!
